Most range hood complaints come down to grease. Saturated filters choke the airflow, and grease buildup slows or jams the fan. A hood that's completely dead, with no fan and no light, usually has a power, switch or control problem instead.

Why is my range hood barely pulling smoke?
Clogged grease filters. The most common cause by far.
A recirculating hood with an old charcoal filter. Charcoal filters can't be washed, and they need replacing every few months.
A blocked or crushed duct, or a stuck damper flap where the duct exits the house.
A worn fan motor that runs slower than it should.
Why won't the fan or light turn on at all?
A tripped breaker or GFCI.
A failed switch or control board. The buttons wear out, especially on hoods that get daily use.
Burned-out bulbs or LED modules (light only).
A failed motor or capacitor. It may hum without spinning.
How do I clean range hood filters?
- •Pop out the metal mesh or baffle filters.
- •Soak them in very hot water with dish soap and a little baking soda for 15–20 minutes.
- •Scrub gently, rinse and let them dry completely before reinstalling.
- •Many metal filters are dishwasher-safe (check your manual).
- •Do this monthly if you cook often, especially with oil.
When should I call a technician?
Call if the fan hums without spinning, the controls don't respond, or the hood still pulls weakly with clean filters. On over-the-range microwaves that act as a hood, the vent fan is part of the microwave, and that's a job for us, not an electrician.
Elliott's take
In a lot of Boston condos the "vented" hood actually recirculates, because there's no way to duct it outside. If yours does, a fresh charcoal filter is the single best upgrade you can make for cooking smells.
