During a self-clean cycle the oven runs at very high temperatures, often over 800°F. The door stays locked until the oven cools, which can take an hour or more. If it's still locked long after that, or the oven won't heat afterward, the heat may have damaged a lock motor, thermal fuse, sensor or control board.

Why is my oven door still locked?
It's still cooling. Give it at least an hour or two after the cycle ends.
The control is stuck. A power reset often releases the lock.
The lock motor or switch failed. The motor that drives the latch can stall, especially in the heat.
A temperature sensor fault tells the oven it's still hot.
How do I safely try to unlock it?
- •Wait until the oven is completely cool to the touch.
- •Turn the breaker off for five minutes, then back on.
- •Try starting and cancelling a short self-clean cycle, which can reset the lock on some models.
- •Don't force the door, because you can bend the latch or crack the glass.
Why doesn't my oven work after self-clean?
The extreme heat stresses components that were already weak. A thermal fuse may blow to protect the oven, or a marginal control board or sensor can fail. This is common enough that many technicians suggest avoiding self-clean right before a holiday.
How can I clean my oven without self-clean?
Use a paste of baking soda and water, leave it overnight and wipe it out, or use the steam-clean cycle if your oven has one. Both are easier on the oven.
Elliott's take
The week before Thanksgiving is our busiest week for ovens, and a lot of it is self-clean failures. If you want a clean oven for the holiday, run self-clean two or three weeks early, so there's time to fix anything it breaks.
