Refrigerator Sweating on the Outside? Here's Why

Condensation on your fridge doors or sides in humid weather? It is usually a door seal or anti-sweat heater issue. What to check and when to call.

Condensation on the outside of a fridge means a cold surface is meeting warm, humid air. A little on a sticky July day can be normal. Steady beads of water, especially along a door edge or between French doors, usually point to a leaking door seal or a failed anti-sweat heater.

At a glance
Can you DIY it?Partly. Gasket cleaning and the energy-saver setting.
How urgent?Low to moderate. It can damage floors and cabinets over time.

Why does my fridge sweat in summer?

Boston summers are humid, and many older homes and condos don't have central air. When the dew point climbs, any surface colder than the air around it collects water, the same way a glass of iced tea does. Light condensation on the warmest, muggiest days is normal.

What causes heavy or constant sweating?

A leaking door gasket. Cold air escapes through a gap and chills the outer edge of the door, so water forms along that strip.

A failed anti-sweat heater. Many fridges have a low-wattage heater behind the center flap of French doors or around the door frame. When it fails, the cabinet edges sweat.

Energy-saver mode switched on. On many models, this setting turns off or reduces the anti-sweat heater to save power.

Door alignment. A sagging door leaves a gap at one corner.

What can I safely check myself?

  • •Look for an "energy saver" or "humidity" setting and turn it off in summer.
  • •Clean the door gaskets with warm soapy water and check for tears or flattened spots.
  • •Close the door on a sheet of paper all around. Wherever it pulls out easily, the seal isn't holding.
  • •On French doors, check that the center flap folds properly when the left door closes.

When should I call a technician?

Call if the sweating continues with energy saver off and clean gaskets, if the center flap is warm to the touch or completely cold (both can signal a heater issue), or if water is running onto the floor.

Elliott's take

In old triple-deckers without AC, I tell people to expect some sweating on the worst days in August. What isn't normal is water pooling along one line on one door every day. That's a seal, and it's also costing you on the electric bill.
