Garage Fridge Quitting in Winter? Why Cold Is the Problem

Garage or porch freezer thawing in a New England winter? Cold air can stop a fridge from running. Why it happens and what fixes it.

It sounds backwards, but a refrigerator in a cold garage can let its freezer thaw. Most fridges sense temperature only in the fresh-food section. When the garage is cold, that section never warms up enough to call for cooling, so the compressor stops running and the freezer slowly warms.

Why does cold stop a refrigerator from running?

A standard fridge is designed for a room between roughly 55°F and 90°F (check your manual for the exact range). Below that, the thermostat thinks the job is done. The compressor rests, and the freezer, which depends on that compressor, warms up with it. Very cold temperatures also thicken compressor oil and can make it hard to start.

How do I know it's the cold and not a broken part?

  • •It worked fine from spring through fall.
  • •Problems began when nights dropped below freezing.
  • •The fresh-food side feels cold, but the freezer is soft or thawing.
  • •It recovers on warmer days.

If all four are true, the fridge is probably healthy and simply outside its operating range.

What are my options?

Move it indoors for the winter, or into a basement that stays above about 55°F.

Add a garage heater kit if the manufacturer makes one for your model. It's a small heater that warms the thermostat area so the compressor keeps cycling.

Use a garage-ready unit. These are built to run across a wider range, often down to around 0°F.

Choose a chest freezer for cold spaces. Many manual-defrost chest freezers handle cold garages better than fridge-freezer combos, but check the rating.

When should I call a technician?

Call if the fridge misbehaves indoors too, if it struggled last summer as well, or if you want a heater kit installed and aren't sure your model supports one.

Elliott's take

Every January we get calls about "dead" garage freezers in places like Dedham, Braintree and Woburn. Most aren't broken at all. A thermometer and a weekend of warmer weather usually prove it before anyone spends money.
