A strong or lingering gas smell, especially with the burners off, is an emergency. Get everyone out, don't touch switches, and call from outside. A brief whiff when a burner or oven lights is usually normal. Everything below explains the difference.

What should I do if I smell gas?

  • •Leave the house, and take people and pets with you.
  • •Don't turn lights on or off, use the stove, or unplug anything.
  • •Don't light matches or lighters.
  • •From outside, call 911 or your gas company's emergency line. In the Boston area, that's National Grid or Eversource, depending on your town.
  • •Don't go back in until the utility or fire department says it's safe.

When is a gas smell normal?

A quick smell when a burner lights, or for a few seconds while the oven igniter heats up, is common. A small amount of gas is released before it ignites. It should vanish within seconds.

What usually causes a real leak at the stove?

A burner knob left slightly on with no flame, often bumped by a child or pet.

A burner that didn't ignite because of a weak igniter or clogged ports.

A loose or aging flexible connector behind the range, especially after the range was moved for cleaning or a floor project.

A failing gas valve inside the range.

What happens after the utility makes it safe?

The utility will find the leak and may shut off or "red tag" the appliance. If the problem is in the gas line or connector, a licensed gas fitter must repair it before service is restored, as Massachusetts law requires. If the problem is inside the range, like a valve or igniter, that's where an appliance technician comes in.

Elliott's take

Never assume you're overreacting with a gas smell. Every utility would rather check a false alarm than miss a real leak. Call them first, then call us once they've made it safe.
