A washer that finishes the cycle but leaves clothes dripping usually can't spin for one of two reasons. Either it can't drain, so it won't risk spinning, or something in the drive system has failed. Many cases turn out to be a clog or an unbalanced load rather than a broken part.

Why won't my washer spin?
The water isn't draining. Washers won't spin with water in the tub. A clogged pump filter or kinked hose is the most common cause, and it's often fixable by hand.
The load is unbalanced. One heavy towel or a single pair of jeans can make the washer stop spinning to protect itself. Many models show a code (UE, UB or similar).
The lid lock or door lock isn't engaging. If the washer can't confirm the door is locked, it won't spin.
A worn drive belt. Common on older top-loaders and some front-loaders. You may hear the motor run while the drum stays still.
A broken motor coupler. On many direct-drive top-loaders, this small plastic part links the motor to the transmission and is designed to break before the motor does.
A motor or control board fault. Less common, and usually comes with an error code.
What can I safely check myself?
- •Redistribute the load and run a "drain and spin" cycle.
- •Clean the drain pump filter (front-loaders: bottom-front access panel; have towels ready).
- •Check the drain hose behind the washer for kinks.
- •Close the lid or door firmly and listen for the lock to click.
- •Note any error code before calling. It speeds up diagnosis.
When should I call a technician?
Call if the washer drains but still won't spin, if you hear the motor running with no drum movement, or if you smell burning rubber, which can mean a slipping belt.
Elliott's take
Small loads cause more "won't spin" calls than people expect. A single bath mat can't balance a large drum. Before calling, try adding two or three towels and spinning again.
