Washer Full of Water: Where the Blockage Actually Is

A washer that will not drain is a filter, a hose, a standpipe or a building stack long before it is a pump. The order to check, and what old Boston plumbing adds to the list.

A tub full of standing water is one of the few appliance faults that is genuinely urgent, because the load is sitting in it and the machine is unusable until it clears. It is also one of the faults most often fixed with the wrong part.

Get the water out first

Whatever the cause, you need the tub empty before anything useful happens.

Turn the machine off at the wall. Put down towels and a shallow baking tray — the tray matters, because most laundry areas have no floor drain and there is more water in there than the drum suggests.

Front-loader: there is a small access door at the front bottom, usually right. Behind it is the pump filter and, on nearly all machines, a short drain tube with a plug. Pull the tube, drain into the tray, empty, repeat. Two to four gallons is normal.

Top-loader: no filter door. Bail what you can with a jug, then lower the drain hose into a bucket on the floor and let gravity finish. The hose must go below the water level in the tub for this to work.

Then check in this order

One — the pump filter. On a front-loader this is the answer more often than everything else put together. Once the tray is under it, unscrew the filter and take out what is in there. Coins, hair ties, buttons, screws, bra wires, a small archaeology of pockets, all bound together with lint and a grey detergent emulsion. Turn the impeller behind it with a finger and make sure it spins freely.

Top-loaders mostly have no serviceable filter, which is why on those the same debris ends up in the pump itself.

Two — the drain hose. Pull the machine out and look at the whole run. Kinks where it has been squashed against the wall are extremely common in the narrow laundry closets in this city's condo conversions, where the gap behind the machine is barely deep enough for the hose to turn.

Check the depth in the standpipe too. More than about eight inches in and the machine siphons — it drains while it is filling, which produces a cycle that never completes and eventually errors.

Three — the standpipe. Take the hose out and pour a gallon of water down the standpipe with a jug. If it backs up, the appliance is not your problem.

This is where a lot of Boston calls end. Old cast-iron drain lines scale up internally over decades until the effective bore is half what it should be. In a triple-decker where three units share a stack, the laundry drain is often the lowest and least-used branch, and it silts. The tell is a machine that drains fine on a small load and overflows the standpipe on a full spin, or one that only backs up when someone upstairs is running water. That is a plumber, and we would rather tell you on the phone than charge you to find out.

Four — the pump. Now it is reasonable to suspect it. A pump that is dead makes no noise at all when it should be draining. A pump that is jammed hums and does nothing. A pump with a damaged impeller runs normally and moves very little water. All three are a genuine repair, and a straightforward one.

Five — the pressure switch or control. If the machine believes the tub is already empty it will never command a drain. The sign is a machine that skips the drain step entirely rather than trying and failing.

What the water in the tub tells you

Look at it before you drain it.

  • Clean and clear: it filled and never agitated. Look at the drain path and the pressure switch, not the pump.
  • Grey and soapy: normal cycle, failed drain. Filter first.
  • Grey with suds still standing hours later: over-dosing. See below.
  • Backed up and smelling of drain rather than laundry: the water is coming back from the building, not staying in the machine. That is the stack.

The over-dosing problem, which is specifically local

Greater Boston is on MWRA supply from the Quabbin and Wachusett; Cambridge draws from Fresh Pond. Both are naturally soft, roughly one to two grains, and dosed with sodium carbonate to lift pH for corrosion control in old lead and copper service lines.

Detergent dosing instructions assume considerably harder water. The result is that most laundry in this city runs on two to three times the detergent it needs. Excess detergent produces suds that a pump cannot move efficiently, leaves residue that builds in the pump housing and the bellows, and on a front-loader will cause a machine to error out on drain time while the pump works perfectly.

If your machine has started draining slowly and nothing else changed, halve your detergent before you call anyone. It is free and it is the answer a fair share of the time.

Dedham and Needham are on wells and genuinely harder — that guidance does not apply there.

Prevention

Clean the front-loader filter every three months. Check pockets. Use HE detergent at roughly half the marked dose. Do not push the drain hose deep into the standpipe. Leave the door open between washes.
