Ventless dryers are common in Boston condos and apartments where an outside vent isn't possible. They do take longer than vented dryers, often 1.5 to 3 hours for a full load. If yours has gotten noticeably slower than it used to be, a clogged lint filter, a dirty condenser or a full water container is usually the reason.

Is it normal for a ventless dryer to be slow?
Yes, to a point. Condenser dryers cool the hot, wet air to pull water out, and heat pump dryers run at lower temperatures to save energy. Both trade speed for efficiency and the lack of a vent. What isn't normal is a cycle that's gotten much longer over time or stops with the clothes still damp.
What makes a ventless dryer slower?
Clogged lint filters. Many have two: one in the door and a second filter in front of the condenser. Both need cleaning.
A dirty condenser or heat exchanger. Lint that gets past the filters coats the fins and blocks airflow.
A full water container, or a drain hose that isn't draining (if it's plumbed to a drain).
Overloading. Ventless dryers need room for air to move.
A failed condensate pump or sensor. Less common, but it can stop the cycle.
How do I clean it properly?
- •Clean the door filter after every load.
- •Rinse the second filter weekly under running water.
- •Remove and rinse the condenser unit monthly (on models where it slides out). Heat pump models usually have a cleaning procedure in the manual.
- •Empty the water container every cycle, unless it's plumbed to a drain.
- •Wipe the moisture sensor bars inside the drum.
When should I call a technician?
Call if the dryer stops with a water-related error after the container is emptied, if the condenser is clean but cycles are still very long, or if the dryer is noticeably cooler inside than it used to be.
Elliott's take
Most ventless dryer calls in Back Bay and Seaport condos end with me showing the owner the second filter they didn't know existed. Check your manual for it today. It's usually behind a small kick plate at the bottom.
