A dryer that won't start is usually missing power, missing a safety signal, or protecting itself. The breaker, the door switch and a blown thermal fuse cover most cases. What you hear when you press start (silence, a hum or a click) narrows it down quickly.

What do you hear when you press start?
Nothing at all, no lights. No power: a tripped breaker, an unplugged cord or a failed outlet.
Lights on, but nothing happens. Door switch, start switch, child lock, or a blown thermal fuse on many models.
A hum, but the drum doesn't turn. A broken belt, a seized drum roller or a motor that can't start.
A click and then nothing. Often the start switch or a motor relay on the control board.
What can I safely check myself?
- •Check the breaker panel. Electric dryers use a double breaker. Flip it fully off and back on.
- •Make sure the dryer is plugged in firmly. Dryer plugs can work loose when the machine is pushed back.
- •Press the door firmly closed and look for a broken door strike or bent switch actuator.
- •Check for a control lock or child lock (often a button held for three seconds).
- •Turn the drum by hand with the dryer unplugged. If it spins with no resistance, the belt has likely broken.
Why does the thermal fuse keep blowing?
On many dryers, a thermal fuse cuts power to the motor when the dryer overheats. It almost always overheats because of restricted airflow: a clogged vent, a crushed hose or a vent hood blocked by snow. Replacing the fuse without fixing the vent just means another blown fuse.
When should I call a technician?
Call if the breaker and door check out, if the dryer hums without turning, or if the thermal fuse has blown more than once.
Elliott's take
When a dryer "suddenly died" right after a snowstorm, I check the outside vent first. A drifted-over vent hood blows the fuse, and the dryer gets blamed.
