Dishwasher Leaking? How to Track It Down

Water under the dishwasher or seeping from the door? Most leaks come from the door gasket, detergent, the inlet valve or a loose drain hose.

A leaking dishwasher usually has one of four problems: a door gasket that's worn or dirty, the wrong detergent, a loose connection underneath, or a dripping inlet valve. Where you see the water, and when, points to which one.

Can you DIY it?Partly. Gasket cleaning, detergent and leveling.

Where is the water showing up?

Along the front edge of the door. Worn or dirty door gasket, a dishwasher that isn't level, or regular dish soap used by mistake (it creates foam that pushes out the door).

Under the dishwasher, toward the front. Often the inlet valve or water line connection behind the kick plate.

Under the sink. The drain hose connection at the disposal or sink tailpiece.

Only during certain cycles. A cracked spray arm or a sump seal that leaks under pressure.

What can I safely check myself?

  • •Wipe the door gasket and check for tears or flattened spots.
  • •Make sure you're using dishwasher detergent, never dish soap.
  • •Remove the kick plate and look underneath with a flashlight while the dishwasher fills.
  • •Check the drain hose clamp under the sink.
  • •Use a level across the front. Out-of-level dishwashers can spill water past the gasket.

Why does my dishwasher stop with a leak code?

Many dishwashers, including Bosch, have a float switch in the base pan. If water collects there, the dishwasher stops and runs its drain pump to protect your floor. If you see a leak code, there's water in the base. Find the source before resetting it.

When should I call a technician?

Call if water appears underneath with no visible cause, if the inlet valve drips when the dishwasher is off, or if the base keeps triggering a leak code.

Elliott's take

In older Boston kitchens, dishwashers often get installed into cabinets that have settled over the years. A dishwasher that was level in 2015 might not be today. Check the level before you replace the gasket.
